What is Google Ads? How advertising in Google Search works

Google Ads is Google’s advertising system that puts your business at the top of the search results exactly when a customer is looking for your services.

Advertising where customers are looking for you

Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords) is an advertising system that lets you display paid ads in Google search results. When a potential customer types in a phrase related to your industry – e.g. “plumber Warsaw” or “online English course” – your ad can appear at the very top of the page, above the organic results.

This is a fundamental difference from search engine optimisation (SEO), which takes months of patient work. Google Ads gives you visibility as soon as the campaign goes live.

How does Google Ads work?

The system is based on an auction model – you pay only when someone actually clicks on your ad (the CPC, or cost-per-click, model). You don’t pay just for the ad being shown. This gives you full control over your budget and lets you measure your return on investment precisely.

  • Search ads: Text ads displayed above and below Google search results. Ideal for winning customers with clear purchase intent.
  • Display ads: Graphic banners displayed on Google’s partner websites. Great for building brand awareness.
  • Performance Max campaigns: Automated campaigns that Google optimises across all its channels at once – in Search, on YouTube, in Gmail and on Maps.
  • Remarketing: Reaching people who have already visited your website but didn’t take action.

Why invest in Google Ads?

  • Instant visibility: Your business appears at the top of the search results from the first day of the campaign.
  • Precise targeting: You reach people who are actively looking for your services – in a specific location, at a specific time of day.
  • Full budget control: You set your own daily spending limit. You can start with as little as a few dozen złoty a day.
  • Measurable results: You know exactly how many enquiries the campaign generated and how much it cost to win each customer.

Is Google Ads right for my business?

If your customers look for your services online – yes. Google Ads works for local businesses (workshops, clinics, restaurants) as well as for e-commerce and B2B services. The key is the right campaign setup, keyword selection and ongoing optimisation – and that’s best left to specialists.
